Shoal May Score Third Win For The Season
The eight-year'old mare Shoal is selected to score her third win for the season in the President’s Handicap, the main event and first leg of the double at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s June meeting at Rangiora on Saturday.
Shoal’s tactics of drifting out of her ground early have failed her in the past on the turning Rangiora track, but she will have a smaller field than usual to thread through on Saturday. A win in the race will take Shoals stake-earnings to past £lO.OOO. . .
Shoal has last-start winning form, over a furlong further, against a similar field at Ashburton. If she is handy on the turn on Saturday she should outsprint her seven opponents. The unlucky Orari galloper Appreciate, a place-getter at his last seven attemnts, may be the
hardest to beat. Appreciate has the ability—valuable on a small track—to run in or close to the lead all the way. Appreciate also has won three times this season. At his last start he carried 9-7 into second place behind Grey Jacket over six furlongs and 44 yards at Waimate. Here he will carry 41b less over one mile and a quarter, a distance which will suit him better. Shoal and Appreciate will probably dominate betting on the race. Likely Runner Another likely runner is Fair Catch, an impressive winner against hacks at Riecarton at Easter. Fair Catch has raced only once in open company, over this distance at Waimate a fortnight ago. He was unable to handle the greasy track and finished sixth. If the track at Rangiora is no worse than easy 'he will be hard to beat. Motueka is a problem. He won the Wairarapa Cup in January and ran second to Mediterranean over 10 furlongs later at that meeting, but has been out of form since. At his best Motueka could easily beat a field of this class. Of these four others the best may be the promoted hack, Come On Boy. Come On Boy is untried In open
company but has a good record in his last few hack races. He won two sprints and ran a solid second to Flagon over 10 furlongs. Strong Fancy Matauwhi will be a strong favourite in the second leg, the Ronald Macdonald Handicap. He has a record of two wins from four attempts in open class' and has only five runners opposing; him. Matauwhi will be suited by the small track. The hardest for him to beat may be Keep Time and Baron Bold. Keep Time ran fourth to Matauwhi at Ashburton last month and has had time since to freshen up. Double fields, with form, are:— PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP, Of £400; one mile and a quarter,
