ARANUI PRIMARY SCHOOL
Preparations For Jubilee A committee to arrange the jubilee celebrations of the Aranui Primary School, was formed last evening. The meeting was well attended by past and present members of the staff and the Aranui School Committee, and former pupils. It was convened by Mr A. S. Lewis, chairman of the school committee. Mr Lewis asked the members of the new committee to seek out as much historical data about the school as possible. He said many persons might have old photographs, documents or newspaper clippings. Suggestions made included a dance, banquet, sports day, display of historical interest, a parade of old school costumes, and competitions. When the school was opened on November 1, 1911, the names of 13 pupils were entered on the roll. At the end of that week there were 16, and now the roll is 814. The school’s first head teacher was Miss B. M. Harband —later Mrs Graham—who died about three years ago. She held the position for 11 years. Among the members of the new committee is Mr E. Reeves, who attended the school on the opening day. He is recorded as pupil number 19 on the rolL
The committee members are:— Messrs E. Reeves, T. Harvey, D. Iggo, G. O. Rouse, A. Flanagan, M. Marshall, S. Maloney, E. Harvey, Mesdames A. Rogerson, B. Searle, E. Boddy, and Miss M. Lindsay. It was suggested that more members might be elected from the school committee. The chairman will be elected when the committee meets on June 23.
