Poultry Show’s Wide Range Of Entries

Almost every known breed of fowl in New Zealand, represented by 1131 birds, at present fills the Christchurch Poultry, Pireon, and Canary Club’s new Selwyn street premises for their 93rd annual show. From Invercargill to Wanganui and towns between, birds began arriving for this, one of the biggest shows of its kind in the Dominion, on Wednesday lunch time. About a dozen birds from North Island centres arrived by air yesterday morning only minutes before judging time. Puffed pigeons, crowing cockerels, perky little bantams and the rest strutted, crowed, and preened themselves in hundreds of cages before critical judges, proud owners and a curious public The biggest class of the show is the 34 Australorps. As in recent years poultry and duck entries remained fairly static. Bantams increased by 70 and cage birds by 50. The biggest drop in entries, 120, were for the pigeon classes. Egg Judging A new feature for this year is the judging of eggs brought in by special exhibitors. These are in batches of six. One is broken to And the texture of yoke and whites. All are weighed and the remaining five are judged for general texture and shell hardness. Judging this event was Mr H. Watson, of the Department of Agriculture, Christchurch. All other eggs laid by show birds are collected and given to charitable institutions. This was a standard precaution to prevent persons from getting specialty breeds on the cheap, said the club secretary (Mr J. H. Taylor). In the cage bird section, which is well patronised this year, there are 70 canaries, about 30 budgerigars, three pairs of lovebirds and in a large cage by itself, a lonely, yellow-combed, white cockatoo.

From Hastings. Mr E. C. Dudding said the Australorps he had judged were of a very high standard—“in fact much better than I’ve seen in the North Island.” Saying he was disappointed with the Rhode Island Reds, Mr Dudding considers breeders have let their birds slip by breeding to colour rather than type. Of the Orpingtons he said not many were .on show but the winner of the class was a first-class specimen.

The duck judge, Mr T. Findlay. said there were more entries for his section than had been seen in recent years. White Peking are the strongest class and although only a few Runners are exhibited, the whites are excellent. In the variety ducks on show there is only one breed. Muscoveys. One of the best patronised classes —93 entries—he had seen in both islands was how Mr W.

Wilkens, judge of the all game poultry section, described his section.

None of the Yorkshire canaries were considered outstanding although entries for the class were never very large in Christchurch, said Mr H. Baker, judge of this section.

Superior to the general standard was the way Mr M. W. Hawkins described the light breeds' section. In the standard class Hamburgs were most prominent with about 100 on show. Mr Hawkins said he was pleased with the way Black Minorcas had come back to the show benches more prominently this year. The show will remain open to the public today and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day. N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS Poultry.—Standard Ancona, female: A. Heyward. White Leghorn, female: E. W. Tuppins.
