Paparoa Coal Deal
Sir, —Your assertion that the Government has no right to give away good New Zealand coal and gdod New Zealand money, without the prospect of tangible returns, will be echoed by taxpayers. The Japanese Government has closed uneconomic coalmines, saving yen to their taxpayers. We New Zealanders foot the bill which will be some £250,000 and, added to our losses of 1958, makes a grand deficit of £1 million. The Mines Department accounts show that losses a few years ago amounted to only £300,000, but 1958 revealed it at more than double, £750,000, which in private business could not be tolerated. Surely it is about time that the coal business of the Dominion was put back on the basis of that period. before nationalisation when private coal mines and allied interests were not a charge on the economy but contributed like all good New Zealanders to fair and just taxation. —Yours, etc., PRO BONO PUBLICO. May 31, 1960.
