Gelignite Found Under House

(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 31. Curiosity prevented a parcel of gelignite being thrown on to an open fire in a house in Paynters avenue, New Plymouth, last week. A woman who lives alone had been cleaning up and burning rubbish. She found an old box beneath the house, took it inside, and was about to shovel the contents into the fire when she noticed a parcel wrapped in newspaper.

Out of curiosity she opened the parcel—and found three sticks of gelignite. According to the Army Department, in almost all cases gelignite would explode when thrown on to a fire.
