BLUFF HARBOUR CONSTRUCTION
Dredge Completes Work (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, June 1. Another stage in the progress of the new Bluff harbour was passed yesterday with the completion of the work of the suction dredge Rupel, which has built up the greater part of the 84-acre island. The end of the dredging was marked last night by a long series of hoots on the dredge’s whistle, and member of the crew and the French contracting company celebrated aboard.
The first load of rock for the island harbour’s walls was carted over the temporary bridge on April 9, 1957, and the reclamation of the foreshore was begun by the Rupel about three weeks later. The dredge began pumping sand into the island harbour early in August that year, and has been engaged in this work almost continuously ever since.
