Athletics CENTRE SEEKS ACTION

Case Of Miss M. Chamberlain

The Canterbury Athletic Centre is to write again to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association urging immediate consideration of the claims of Miss M. Chamberlain to further time for qualification for inclusion in the national team for the Olympic Games in Rome this year. This wae decided at a meeting of the executive of the association last evening. No reply had been received from the national body to a letter written after the special meeting of the centre on May 25. said the chairman (Mr K. S. Jameson). This meeting decided to ask the New Zealand association to set a standard time for Miss Chamberlain in the 800 metres event, so that if she attained this time she would be included in the official team.

It was possible that no meeting of the national athletic executive had been held since the writing of this letter, said Mr Jameson. On the motion of Mr R. Elder, it was decided to write to Canterbury’s delegates, Messrs H. I. Austad and G: I. Fox. stressing the urgency of the matter, and asking them to do what they could to hasten a decision.

Canterbury will suggest to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association that the national women's and junior championships for next season be held in Christchurch on March 3 and 4. This season these titles were held in Christchurch on March 11 and 12. A letter was received from the Auckland Athletic Centre saying that an Auckland representative team proposed to make a tour of the Dominion next season, and asking for a suitable date for a meeting in Christchurch. “We should seize this opportunity -to have the Aucklanders in Christchurch." said Mr G. E. Voller. “It would be good for our athletes to compete against them." It was agreed that the most suitable date in Christchurch would be a Saturday towards the end of January. It was suggested that Auckland be paid 50 per cent, of the profit on the fixture as a contribution towards travelling costs.
