Golf U.K. WOMEN’S AMATEUR
Eight Players Still Left (N.Z. Press Association— CopyrightJ LONDON, June 1. With four rounds finished eight players are now .eft in the women’s British amateur golf championship—three Britons, four Americans and the Vicomtesse de St. Sauveur, of France. The championship is being played at St. David’s course in Harlech, North Wales. Britain’s representatives are Miss Philomena Garvey and the teenagers, Miss Hilary Williamson and Miss Sheila Vaughan. America is represented by the United States Curtis Cup players. Miss J. Gunderson, Miss J. Goodwin, Miss B. Mclntire and Miss A. Quast. “The Times” said at one point in the play yesterday it seemed as though England might not be represented at all today. But a ray of sunshine was provided when 18-year-old Miss Vaughan, the reigning girls’ champion, defeated Miss Eller, twice United States junior champion, 2 and 1. The day’s biggest upset was when Miss Gillian Coldwell scored a 3 and 1 win in the third round over one of Britain’s foremost women golfers, Mrs Frances Smith. But Miss Coldwell failed later when she was defeated 7 and 6 by the United States champion, Miss Mclntire.
