TRANQUILLISERS FOR BISON
Zoo Change Made Quietly
"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, June 1.
Modern science replaced Buffalo Bill at the Auckland Zoo when two half-grown bison were to be moved from the pen they had been in since they were calves. Their new pen was -on the other side of the zoo. A horse float was to have been used, but after a struggle lasting two hours and a half to get them inside the keepers gave up. Then the head keeper (Mr J. Brooks) had an idea. Tranquilliser tablets were given to the bison in bran mash. Forty-five minutes later, with side roads blocked, the pen was opened. The animals wandered out, stopped, looked around, then walked slowly to their new pen. "They were so quiet we almost had to lead them," said Mr Brooks.
In spite of the success of the drug Mr Brooks is not willing to try it out again on the full-grown bison which also has to be transferred. It will be left for some time.
