Study Of Pa Site

Experts from the Dominion Museum will examine the site of the Tarata Pa, eight miles north of Waitotara, during the weekend. Mr C. Smart, assistant ethnologist of the museum, will lead a party of eight from Wellington. and will later be joined by others from Wanganui and Palmerston North. Mr Smart said yesterday that this would be the first time a pa site such as Tarata was examined in detail. Cut out of soft papa rock, it was remarkably well preserved and ideal for study. A layer of soft earth had built up over the excavations before weathering changed their appearance.—(P.A.)
