N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 31
Australia’s Fettle was scratched today from the first event in the three-race international pacing series at Yonkers Raceway scheduled for Thursday night. A raceway official said Fettle had suffered a "slight strain on the check ligament below nfs right hind hock.”
The injury apparently had occurred a week ago when Fettle sprung a shoe while "acting up" in his stall at the raceway, he said. It was not noticed until several days later when the norse began to limp during a workout. It was hoped that Fettle would be fit to run in the second event of the international series on June 9. Fettle had been quoted in pre-race betting at 15 to 1. Caduceus is 7 to 2. The favourite is the American horse. Bye Bye Bird, at 8 to 5. Ron Hayes, of Bega, New South Wales, the driver of Fettle, was not available for comment tonight. The raceway official said Hayes was verydisappointed. but expected to race the horse in the second and third events of the series.
Jack Litten, of West Melton. Caduceus' driver, said tonight that the New Zealand champion was in good shape. He would not predict the result of Thursday’s race. He was confident Caduceus would do well, but described the opposition as "the beet in the world.”
