CIVIL DEFENCE PLANNING
Greater Scope Urged For Trained Persons
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 1. The time had come for bureaucrats to give way to men and women who had the training and ability to get behind a civil defence scheme in Wellington, said the chief secretary of the Venerable Order of St John (Mr C. Meachen) today. He was addressing the Wellington branch of the order.
Many people, he said, would recall the sense of general lack of encouragement before a trial was held in 1958.
A year previously the civic authorities had been approached, but 12 months went by before the various units came together for a full-scale trial When the night trial was over it was thought that, before disbanding the doctors, nurses and others would be able to give their opinions and views. But all that happened was cordial thanks from “the powers that be” and everyone went home.
