BAN ON WEEK-END SALES
Vegetable Growers Criticise Act (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 1. The market division of the Vegetable and Produce Growers’ Federation is concerned that canned and frozen vegetables can be bought at week-ends and fresh vegetables cannot Mr O. L. Chisholm (Wanganui) said at the federation's annual conference in Wellington today that the inability of shops to sell fresh vegetables at week-ends was “serious” because many countries were dependent on canned and frozen foods. New Zealand had abundant supplies of fresh vegetables and fruit for its children. “It does not make sense to me that they should have to eat frozen food and out of cans when there is such a plentiful supply of beautiful vegetables and fruit” he said.
Mr A. C. Whitcher (Lower Hutt) said it seemed nonsensical that a wide variety of commodities could be sold at week-ends and fresh vegetables were excluded. It was unfair to produce growers and the public. “If they are going to bar fresh fruit and vegetables they should have debarred tomatoes,” he said.
