Former Leaders Of Turkey To Be Tried
(Rec. 10 p.m.) ANKARA, June 1. The Istanbul bar last night decided not to defend former officials of the overthrown Menderes regime in any cases brought against them for illegal acta. The Istanbul bar will propose that a similar decision be taken by all other bars in Turkey.
Lawyers both In Istanbul and Izmir took part in the student demonstrations against the Men-* deres regime. Turkey’s interim Government announced last night that it had ordered the Justice Minister to set up an inquiry committee to investigate members cf the regime. Those found guilty would be brought before the Supreme Court A communique issued by the Cabinet said this decision was taken to assure swift action and to prevent the loss of material evidence. It also instructed the Justice Minister, Mr Abdullah Gscubuyuk, to set up an “absolutely independent and solid Judicial apparatus.” Turkey’s new leader. General Cemal Gursel, was asked at a press conference earlier on what grounds the arrested leaders of the fallen government would be tried An aide interjected: “They are in gaol because they acted against the Constitution. That will be the background to the trial;” Tass. the official Soviet news agency, said test night that the former Turkish President Mr Cetel Bayar. had attempted suicide. “He hanged himself with his tie, but was cut down by an officer on duty.” Tam reported from Ankara. Mr Bayar was under arrest af the Ankara military school.
