BRIGADIER JAMES HARGEST, C.B.E., D.S.O. and Bar, M.C., M.P., who commanded the Second Echelon when it left New Zealand for overseas. He commanded the 5th Brigade in Greece, Crete and the 1941 campaign in the Western Desert where he was captured when his headquarters were overrun by Afrika Korps tanks. He caped from prison camp in Italy and got back to England through Switzerland, France and Spain. He was killed in action in Normandy in 1944.
