C.O.R.S.O. Appeal
.Refugees are the greatest human tragedy of the present generation. Their miseries are a constant challenge to countries such as New Zealand, which have escaped the worst cruelties of war, famine, pestilence, and catastrophe. During World Refugee Year a special international effort is being made to raise £ 12 million for alleviating -the refugees’ distress; but this amount is small compared with world needs. Today householders throughout New Zealand will be asked by C.0.R.5.0. to 'contribute money towards the Dominion’s World Refugee Year quota of £125,000. In Christchurch and North Canterbury C.0.R.5.0. hopes to raise £15.000, compared with £ll,OOO contributed during a similar appeal last year. C.0.R.5.0.,
an officially-accredited body formed after the Second World War to co-ordinate New Zealand assistance for relief projects overseas, relies almost exclusively upon voluntary assistance to conduct its appeals. Its workers represent a crosssection of the community. Today about 3000 volunteers will call on homes in and near Christchurch. Their cooperation will enable residents to help in discharging NewZealand’s moral responsibility towards suffering humanity everywhere. An excellent example of the manner in which this responsibility should be accepted even by small countries has been set in Norway where, in terms of population, gifts to the refugee cause have been about five times as generous as New Zealand gifts have been
