November Event At Flemington
(N.Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) MELBOURNE, February 12. The richest mile race in Australia—the £AIO,OOO Geo. Adams (Tattersall’s) Handicap will be run for the first time at Flemington on November s—the Saturday after the Melbourne Cup. The trustees of the estate of the late Geo- Adams are sponsoring the race. The Victorian Racing Club secretary, Mr K. A. Morrison, announced the new race today after a conference with Mr A. M. Kilgour, supervising trustee for the estate. The race will be the first sponsored event ever run in the Commonwealth. The Geo. Adams (Tattersall’s) Handicap will be on the last day of the V.R.C.’s centenary Melbourne Cup meeting. In addition to the £AIO,OOO stake money, a trophy will be given to the winning owner. Mr Kilgour told the VR.C. committee today that the trustees’ offer was for the centenary cup meeting only; but they would be pleased to discuss the presentation of an annual trophy if the V.R C decided to continue the event The new race will be a big boost to the spring carnival. It is expected to attract the best sprinters from other States and New Zealand. Previously, the richest mile races were run by the A.J.C. in Sydney—the £A6OOO Doncaster Handicap, run in the autumn, and the £A5500 Epsom, in the spring.
