Sportsman’s Notebook MANY NEW RECORDS IN PROVINCIAL SWIMMING

Thirty two Canterbury swimming records, senior and junior, were established in the provincial championships last week, and one further provincial record was equalled. Five new national records Were set, and one equalled.

With the reconstitution of New Zealand swimming into junior and senior sections, and the elimination of the old intermediate grade, required times were set by the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association for national records in the new junior grade. Most of the new records were set in this grade, these being 11 of the provincial records and all the new national times set last week. Leading the new record-holders are Miss S. Nicholson and M. Manderson. Miss Nicholson set seven new Canterbury records, one of these being shared with another swimmer, and two new national junior times. Miss Nicholson’s new Canterbury records are in the 110 yards, 220 yards, and 440 yards junior and senior events, and she shared the record for the junior 55 yards with Miss E. Edwards. Her new national times are in the junior 220 yards and 440 yards.

Manderson also set two new national records, these being in the 110 yards freestyle and the 220 yards freestyle. In addition, Manderson set a new'brovincial time in the .jufubr 110 yards butterfly. Miss W. Dale set five new provincial records in the

junior girls’ under 13 section—in the 55 yards, 110 yards, and 220 yards freestyle, and the 110 yards and 220 yards backstroke

Swimmers who set two new Canterbury records were Misses F. BuUivant, D. Bullivant, and C. Johnson, and M. Hay and A. Harrow. Hay, in the junior 220 yards breaststroke, also set a new national time, and the national time was equalled in the junior 110 yards backstroke by B. Hocking, when he set a new provincial time. Other Canterbury records were set by C. McFadden, G. Le Cren, A. Quail, and Misses A. Blair, R. George, S. Pitama, and F. Moir. * * * Rugby Trialists Three Wellington Rugby representatives who have been nominated for this year’s trials for selection of the New Zealand team to go to South Africa, L N. Mac Ewan, B. A. Cull, and J. R. Watt, have all been showing good form in athletic events this season. The three are members of the Athletic Rugby club, and run for the Onslow club. Mac Ewan has done well over the 100 yards and also in the shot put, and Watt and Cull have also shown form over the sprints. * ¥ International Golf Gary Player, Stan Leonard, and Peter Thomson are among worldclass golfers who have already accepted invitations to compete in a sponsored £ 1500 golf tournament to be held in Australia later this year. The tournaent will be played over 162 holes in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and four country centres, with 18 holes on each of seven courses and 36 on the eighth. Norman Von Nida will visit the United States soon to invite leading American professionals to compete. * * * Soccer Referee Mr B. T. Martin, patron of the New Zealand Soccer Referees' Association since 1952, died in Wellington last week. Aged 82, Mr Martin was also a life meiriber of the New Zealand Football Association. He resigned from the presidency of the New Zealand Soccer Referees' Association last year after 50 years’ service to the sport in New Zealand. Since 1923, Mr Martin has been a regular attender at Chatham Cup finals, and missed only one such fixture in that period.
