Y.M.C.A. CAMP IN WAIRAU VALLEY
“Adventurous Living” For Fortnight
(New Zeaiintt Press Association) BLENHEIM, January 25.
Twelve youths, suntanned and fit, stepped from a truck this morning after a fortnight of “adventurous living” in the upper reaches of the Wairau valley. They were members of a Y.M.C.A. camping venture which concentrated on disciplined living rather than the ordinary type of camping.
Torrential rain yesterday hastened their departure by 12 hours. The camp director (Mr Colin Coates) reluctantly decided that rather than have the boys’ parents concerned about their non-appearance at the scheduled time, the camp should break up yesterday afternoon as the rivers running into the Wairau, which had to be forded by truck, were rising and threatening to cut the only route to the main highway.
