INJURED DRIVER FIGHTS FIRE
Spread Into Forest
Prevented
(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, January 25.
Fighting off unconsciousness, a Rotorua bush contractor, Mr W. Snowden, prevented a serious fire in the Kaingaroa forest on Friday night. Mr Snowden's motorcar burst into flames when it ran off the road, and but for his efforts the fire would have spread into dry timber. When the car ran off the road it struck a telegraph pole. Mr Snowden, who suffered cuts on the hands and face, struggled from the vehicle, and realising the danger to the forest, fought the flames with a blanket and his jacket. Mr Snowden’s efforts were successful and, on the point of collapse, he was picked up by Mr and Mrs M. McKeen, of Murupara. He was in a dazed condition and it was some time before he could give a coherent account of the incident. An officer of the New Zealand Forest Service this morning described Mr Snowden’s efforts as "particularly heroic.” The comparative isolation of the road meant that had Mr Snowden not quelled the flames, notification of the fire would have been delayed.
