RACING SUMMER HANDICAP TO ILUMQUH

Stayers Outclassed At

Trentham

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, January 25.

Ilumquh easily outstayed his rivals in the £3OOO Summer Handicap at Trentham today, his performance ranking with some of the best seen on the course for a long time.

Ilumquh, a half-brother by Sabaean to the 1958 Melbourne Cup winner Straight Draw, was having only his second start in open company. His chance looked anything but bright coming to the straight but in the end he won running away by a length and three-quarters from Rustic, which outlasted Revolver.

Ilumquh had his first open class test for Mr A. C. Williams, of Masterton, in the mile Anniversary Handicap on Wellington Cup day. He ran fourth and did not get anything like a trouble-free run.

Mr Williams races Ilumquh n lease from his wife, who bred Straight Draw and today’s winner at the Te Parae Stud at Masterton.

Ilumquh was the 1/2 favourite. He was patiently ridden by the Riccarton light-weight N. Eastwood, who was justifiably confident of the brown’s ability to sprint brilliantly from a position near the tail of the field. Ilumquh is trained at Woodville by E. Ropiha, and is a stablemate of Happy Warrior, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap, the big sprint race on the second day of the meeting. Ilumquh carried £9995 of a doubles pool of £85,237 10s.

Minglow rounded off the day’s double with an easy win in the City Handicap. This was easily Minglow’s best win for her Dunedin owners, Messrs J. E. Reeves and G. B. Thomson. Holders of 1189 5s tickets on the Ilumquh—Minglow combination received £237 for £l.

Minglow was the ninth choice in win and place betting and paid £l9 14s 6d for a win. She gave the successful Wingatui apprentice J. R. Dowling his first win at Trentham.

After overnight rain the track cut out slightly early in the day but there were some fast gallops. Threatening weather affected betting and attendance figures today, when the totalisator handled £175,435 10s on course. The turnover for the third day last year was £178,973. The on-course turnover for the meeting was £598,489 10s, an increase of £51,726 10s on last year’s total of £546,763. Humquh’s Brilliant Win Last but one in a field of 19 at the half-mile and still far from the lead on the home turn, Ilumquh showed exceptional ability to win the Summer Handicap, the first leg of the double. Ilumquh stormed past Rustic and Revolver into the lead inside the last furlong and won running away by a length and three-quarters. Gibraltar, Revolver, Rustic and Arid ran in line in the lead after two furlongs, and Jim’s Count. Tilly Light. Magic Circle, Whiohau and Motueka were close behind. Ilumquh was third to last at the

mile, where Gibraltar was setting a rather leisurely pace from Revolver, Whiohau, Tilly Light, Rustic, Folgia d’O.o, Magic Circle, Arid Jalna, Jim’s Count. Elsted, Motueka. Anacapri and Mediterranean. Foglia d’Oro was taken forward far enough to shade Gibraltar starting the last half-mile. Revolver, Whiohau, Tilly Light, Rustic. Jim’s Count and Jalna were close behind Gibraltar. Whiohau and Foglia d’Oro started on the run home in line and Rustic and Revolver were following closely. Rustic and Revolver came to the front simultaneously a furlong out. Rustic slowly going into a short lead ana looked as she would win handily. But she could not live with Ilumquh, which looked as if he had only joined in at the furlong. Rustic beat Revolver by a long head for second. Whiohau was fourth in a gap of about two lengths and the Wellington Cup winner, Jalna. was a weakening fifth in another small gap. Jalna was followed in by Anacapri, Port Wine, Peter Baffles, Tilly Light, Sunny Story, Jim’s Count, Elsted, Mireusonta, Mediterranean, Arid, Motueka, Foglia d’Oro, Magic Circle and Gibraltar. Easy for Minglow

Minglow led from outside the furlong for an easy win in the City Handicap, second leg of the double. Minglow followed Kathey’s Romance, Lion, Romancing, and Karina leaving the chute to the course proper.

Lion led after they joined the running rail and appeared to be going comfortably, but he did not put up much fight when Minglow challenged. Minglow led at the furlong and. ridden right out, for a moment, quickly went beyond challenging distance of the others. Nimbula, the second favourite, beat the top-weight, Karina, by three-quarters of a length for second. Nimbula made his run towards the middle of the track. He shifted ground slightly towards Karina when his rider went for the whip on him about a furlong and a half out and led a hopeless chace after Minglow near the end. Karina was forced rather wide coming out of the chute and ran a very game race for a three-year-old filly carrying 9-1. Lion was a weakening fourth and Blonde Sprite was fifth, just ahead of No Boots, which was slowest away Feleka drifted to the tail of the field and was in a gap at the rear half-way through the race, so he did not do at all badly to finish seventh.

Tyrant was next and was followed in by Kathey’s Romance, Romancing, Lorica and Hopeful.
