Police Massacred By Africans In Durban

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec. 11 p.m.) DURBAN, January 25. Strong police forces, heavily armed, were today standing by in the “massacre township” of Cato Manor, near Durban, where nine policemen were hacked and stoned to death last night in an attack by 1000 Africans.

The African township was the scene of, bloody riots last June when mobs swarmed through the streets setting fire to buildings and causing damage estimated at more than £250,000.

The latest riot broke out when a 26-man police patrol raided the town looking for illicit liquor stills. It was a similar police raid which sparked off the earlier riots.

Half the police raiding party was taking prisoners back to the local gaol when the other 13 were attacked. The police opened fire but were quickly overwhelmed. Four white, and five non-white police died, the largest police death toll in the whole of Durban’s history of African troubles. A second police party of five men barely escaped after radioing: “They are going to stone us to death.” Several buses were stoned and one was burned out.
