Remanded On Arson Charges

(New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, Sept. 23.

On two charges of arson, after fires at the Gisborne Courthouse and premises of A. Christie (Gisborne), Ltd., on August 15, Hikitoia Matenga, aged 22, a workman, wqs remanded till September 30 by Mr L. N. Ritchie, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court. The Magistrate said he was interested in the matters incidental to the charges, and another Magistrate should deal with the charges. Any personal loss he had suffered as a result of the fire should be dealt with by a completely disinterested person, he said.

The remand was not opposed by the police.
