HOUSE SURGEON SHORTAGE

Board’s Requirements Not Allowed

In spite of the assertion of the North Canterbury Hospital Board that 20 was the minimum number of house surgeons required to maintain service in 1960, the Health Department had advised the board that it is prepared to approve the appointment of 19 only to the board’s institutions. Representations against the decision had been made, the institution’s committee reported to yesterday’s meeting of the board. It had been emphasised that the board was not demanding in its request, in view of the opening of Princess Margaret Hospital.

The appointment of 19 house surgeons is conditional upon any call the department may have for the services of bursars.
