Wage Increase
Sir, —What would “Realistic” consider should be done to alleviate the lot of average working people in the face of rising prices? Docs he favour pegging wages permanently or, if not, who is to be the judge of when the New Zealand economy is able to afford a wage rise? Some few years ago, while I was in Australia, where they had a quarterly wage adjustment to meet the rise or fall in prices, I saw wages pegged for 12 months on the ground that price rises were caused mainly by wage increases; but, in that period, prices continued to advance just the same. Does “Realistic” believe that industry should serve humanity or that human beings are only cogs in industry and merit little humane consideration. —Yours, etc., CIVIS. September 22, 1959.
