INDOOR BOWLS

Pairs Championship To Mother And Son

The United Friendly Societies’ Indoor Bowling Association’s pairs championship held on Tuesday evening at the McLean Street Hall, ended as a famliy affair, with M. Pennev and Mrs B. Penney, of the Oak of Sydenham Lodge, meeting B. Powell and his mother, of the Loval Addington Lodge, in the final. To reach the final Mrs Penney had beaten her father. F. Bearne, and Powell had beaten the Canterbury’ titleholder. G. N. Taylor.

Mrs Penney, playing to good leading by her husband, scored two in each of the first two heads, and at the end of the third head had a 5-0 lead. Powell then took command. Although each of the next six ends were closely contested, he nudged out - the opposition for one on the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, two with precision drawing in the eighth, and another with his last bowl on the ninth. The Penney pair came back in the tenth, snatching one from a perfect draw shot, and in the eleventh head gained two more on steady, accurate bowling. The final head was thrilling, with the advantage changing shot by shot. The final count was in doubt right up to the last ball. Powell secured two to give him the game and the championship, 9-8.
