NEW SELLING RING
Installation At Addington
Farmers attending Addington market yesterday saw a start being made with the erection of a new selling ring for bulls and cattle.
The Canterbury Saleyards Company is having the new ring or pen put up on the site of the old wooden pavilion, which was removed after the new cafeteria and office block was erected. The ring will be able to be removed after use so that the area can also be used as a car park. Of octagonal shape with a diameter of about 30 feet, the new ring will be of galvanised pipe construction. It will be 6ft high with six rails and a series of 38 dual galvanised pipe posts will stand in sheet metal boxes encased in concrete.
The design of the yard includes a baffle panel of sheet metal behind which attendants can shelter after a bull has been brought into the ring. Tiered seating accommodation will be provided for buyers and spectators.
The installation of the ring is expected to take three or four days.
The ring is likely to be used for the first time next month for the dispersal sale of a Galloway herd. On October 19 it will be the scene of the annual Aberdeen Angus bull sale.
