POULTRY FARM GRADING
Incentive Payment For Quality
A trial scheme to grade poultry farms in New Zealand was started by the New Zealand Poultry Board in Christchurch a week ago. Under the scheme farms which produce good quality eggs are given an additional Id a dozen as an incentive payment.
In the Christchurch area poultry farms have been classified into special grades according to the quality of the eggs they produce.
1 The chairman of the Canterbury branch of the Poultrykeepers’ Association (Mr J. M. Powell) said the scheme begun by the board in the Christchurch area was quite a good one. The Id a dozen incentive payment was paid to poultry farmers by ithe Christchurch egg floor which (went without Id a dozen of its handling commission. The | money was paid out to selected farms.
“The scheme is being run with the co-operation of the egg I floors in Christchurch and Weilington,” said Mr Powell. “The 'best quality eggs are selected by the poultry farmers and are sent to Wellington. They are trying to get a better quality egg on I the Wellington market.
| “At present 3000 dozen eggs 'are being sent to Wellington each week. We are hoping to build it up to 9000 dozen eggs a week. “This is just a pilot scheme,” said Mr Powell. “The industry has been asking for farm grading I for some time. A lot of us have been putting a lot of time into producing eggs of high quality but we have been getting only the same price as othc rs who don’t care what sort of egg they sell as long as it’s an egg.”
