No Changes In Bill
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 23.
The House of Representatives Lands Committee has considered the Land Settlement Promotion Amendment Bill and recommended that it proceed without amendment. The commitee’s chairman (Mr T. Omana) reported this to the House today. Mr R. G. Gerard (Opposition. Ashburton) said it was only on tl.e chairman’s casting vote that the bill came back from the committee without amendment. The Opposition still opposed some provisions in the bill. ’ Mr Gerard said the Opposition would debate the bill again during the committee stage in the House.
The Opposition’s main criticism of the bill related to the compulsory residence clause.
CLAIMS FOR TAX REFUNDS
Mr Shand’s Advice
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON. September 23. Every person in the country would be well advised to apply for a tax refund, Mr T. P. Shand (Opposition, Marlborough) told the House of Representatives tonight during discussion of the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s a salary earner, wage earner, or self-employed, everyone should put in for a refund,” said Mr Shand.
Not all would get a refund, but most would, even though it might be a few shillings only, Mr Shand said.
“This bill means we are virtually scrapping the P.A.Y.E. scheme without giving it a trial,” he said.
Applications for refunds would mean the annual form-filling again as in the old system. But people would still be well advised to put in for a refund under “this complicated business.”
