Mr E. W. Hullett New President

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 28.

Mr E. W. Hullett, director of the Wheat Research Institute, Christchurch, was elected president of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry at its annual meeting in Dunedin. Professor H. N. Parton, head of the department of chemistry at the University of Otago, was elected vice-presidfent, and Dr. W. E. Harvey, of Victoria University, Wellington, was elected general secretary. The committee is appointed by branches later.

Prizes announced were: Professor J. Packer and Mr J. Vaughan, both of the department of chemistry, Canterbury University, were awarded the 1.C.1. prize for their significant contribution to chemistry over the last five years in work on the mechanism of organic reaction.

Dr. E. L. Richards, of Massey Agricultural College (formerly of the Dairy Research Institute, was awarded the Morcom, Green and Edwards prize for work on reactions which are important in the spoiling of foods. Dr. R. D. Batt, senior lecturer in biochemistry at the Medical School of the University of Otago, was awarded the chemical essay prize.
