Crowds At Rugby Matches
Sir,—While congratulating the Canterbury Rugby Union on opening the gates at midday, something will have to be done about “baggage” if the disgraceful fiasco of Athletic Park is not to be repeated. I, like “Aucklander,” saw practically nothing of the game because of people sitting down, complete with luggage, as if on a long weekend. Coming out, I estimated at least one in three had cases, rugs, etc. No attempt was made at either packing or directing the embankment crowd. Imagine a Wembly Cup final controlled similarly! International Rugby in New Zealand is now “big business,” and, as such, the Rugby Union needs to get beyond the kindergarten methods for booking, controlling and organising crowds.—Yours, etc., N E.T. August 25, 1959.
