Badminton PLAY-OFF IN A GRADE
Three Teams Equal
Three teams, University A, Knox A and Christchurch, have tied for first place in the Canterbury Badminton Association’s A grade competition this season, and a play-off will be necessary to determine the winner of the grade. These three teams have each had one loss. University A losing to Knox A, Knox A losing to Christchurch, and Christchurch losing to University A. These three teams have filled the first three places in the competition for the last two years, with Knox A winning last year and Christchurch in 1956. The play-off will take glace in two weeks’ time, as the ew Zealand championships are being played tn Christchurch next week.
i A play-off is also necessary in the B grade between Knox and Railway, each of which has had two losses in 13-matches. In the C grade there is one match to be played between University and Central, and if this is won by University there will be a play-off for first place between Central and Wesley. Results were:— Christchurch v. Knox A Singles.—R K. Macefield beat A. Roberts, 15-3, 15-3; D. B. Reid beat C. G. Snook, 15-17, 15-11, 15-2; Mrs A. Ryan lost to Miss B. Webster. 11-8. 2-11, 10-12; Miss E. Reaster lost to Miss S. Miller, 8-11. 11-12. Doubles—Macefield and Reid beat Roberts and Snook, 18-14, 18-16; Mrs Ryan and Miss Reaston lost to Miss Debster and Miss Miller. 9-15, 7-15; Macefield and Mrs Ryan beat Roberts and Miss Webster, 15-3, 11-15, 15-6; Reid and Miss Reaston lost to Snook and Miss Miller. 15-1, 6-15, 14-17. Christchurch won by 245 points to 207. University B v. Knox B Singles.—W. J. Mitchell beat E. A Hartington, 13-15, 17-14. 15-11; R Dunn lost to S. J. Lawn. 11-15, 15-9, 14- Miss R. Sutton beat Miss W Wall, 12-9, 4-11, 11-6: Miss M. Edwards beat Miss M. Benjamin, 4-11, 11-2, 11-1. Doubles —Mitchell and Dunn lost to Harrington and Lawn, 0-15, 9-15; Miss Sutton and Miss Edwards beat Miss Wall and Miss Benjamin. 15-7, 18-16; Mitchell and Miss Sutton lost to Harrington and Miss Wall, 3-15. 11-15; Dunn and Miss Edwards beat Lawn and Miss Benjamin, 15-11. 15University B won bv 5 matches to 3. Unidentified Fish.— A fish about : sft long, which has not yet been ■ positively identified, was sent to i a Christchurch fish market by Mr George Lynne, who operates the trawler Te Rawene from Lyttelton. It is believed that the fish might be a species of tuna. One man. who had been in the fishing industry for almost 40 years, said he could not identify I the fish. The fish was about 18. inches wide at its broadest part and it has a large mouth. |
