CONTROL OF TRAFFIC
“Not Job For Police”
iNew Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 25. The Minister of Police (Mr Connolly) told the House of Representatives tonight that he did not think it was the Police Department’s job to control traffic. He was speaking during discussion on the vote in the Estimates for the department. “The main job of the police is crime prevention,” Mr Connolly added.
He was replying to Mr G. A. Walsh (Opposition, Tauranga), who earlier had urged closer cooperation between police and transport officers. To secure this, Mr Walsh said he thought that the initiative rested with the transport side, and an ideal arrangement could be arrived at if the transport authority were to be in the Police Departmerit. A tremendous advantage could be obtained if there were a single authority policing the roads, he said.
Mr Connolly said it might be possible to give police control of traffic a trial for a period in a particular area.
