OFFICIAL REPORT

The official report issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the Woolbuyers’ Assbciation ind the Wool Commission of New Zealand, states: The first sale of the 1959/60 season opened yesterday in Christchurch with a combined offering from North and South Canterbury, and also on account of the Wool Commission. The following were quantities submitted :

Account Christchurch, 12,768 bales; account Timaru, 8200 bales; account Wool Commission, 14,254 bales.

The offering totals 35,222 bales, of which 3545 bales of Christchurch new clip and 7438 bales of Christchurch Wool Commission stock will be sold on the morning of August 22. Included in the brokers’ offerings was a considerable quantity of early shorn and second-shear fleece wool, and these opened up particularly well, being mainly sound and clean and very light in condition. The crutchings from South Canterbury district were generally well-grown and light in condition, but many of the finer quality crutchings from the northern districts were rather short in the staple and were rather heavier than usual. There was a full attendance of buyers, and all classes of fleece wool met with good competition. Fine quality fleece was fully firm on late rates, and medium and coarse qualities sold in sellers’ favour. The market for crutchings. however, was a little easier, especially for fine wools, which sold irregularly at lower rates. Coarser sorts met with a better demand, but can be quoted as in buyers’ favour. AU classes of pieces and oddments sold very well at full late values.
