IN PASSING
A message from Oarnaru describing a man’s embarrassment when mistaken for the Minister of Finance, said the man was “the ‘spitting’ image” of Mr Nordmeyer. But was he? A slovenly verbal contraction of two words is responsible for an error. In this context the word “spitting” has no relationship to the ejection of saliva, but should be two words, “spit and,” the word spit meaning a counterpart—e.g. “the dead spit of.” Thus, it should have been said that the Oamaru gentleman was “the spit and image of Mr Nordmeyer.”
