Fewer Peach, Plum, Cherry Trees The Department of Agriculture orchard survey has shown that in the last five years the number of peach, plum and cherry trees decreased, while there was a small increase in the number of apricot and nectarine trees, the figures being: Peach, from 302,107 trees to 299,081; plum, from 112,939 to 104,794; eherry, from 21.000 to 19,161; apricot from 120,859 to 121,423; and nectarine, from 27,000 to 32,235. Of the 2258 acres in peach trees, 797 acres are in Hawke’s Bay, 542 in Auckland and 488 in Central Otago. Of the 801 acres of apricot trees, 638 are in Central Otago, 83 in Canterbury and South Canterbury and 63 in Hawke’s Bay. Of the 698 acres of plum trees, 217 are in Hawke’s Bay, 195 in Central Otago and 151 in the environs of Auckland.
