Smith, the 38-year-old Sussex and England left-hander, completed a rare hat-trick of centuries against touring teams when he hit 145 not out against India, at Hove, Sussex, today. Sussex, one of the weakest sides in this year's county championship, had the Indians in difficulties at the close when they were 185 runs behind with nine second innings wickets to fall. Smith, who batted for five hours and hit 12 4’s and a 5, made 147 against the West Indies in 1957. ana slammed. 142 against the New Zealanders last year.
