FIRST BIG CATCH OF TOHEROA
3700 Shellfish And Three Men “The Press" Special Service DARGAVILLE, July 17. The first big catch of the toheroa season was brought off at 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday by. Mr A. H. Taylor, the Northern Wairoa fisheries inspector, with the assistance of Constables J. J. Corbett and A. D. Crawford, of Dargaville. They saw a small unlighted truck being driven off the beach at Mahuta and when they ordered the driver to stop four men jumped out and made off. Three were caught, but the fourth escaped in the darkness. The men, who were all from Titoki, were brought to the Dargaville police station where it was found that the seven sacks on the truck contained 3700 toheroa. One thousand of these were undersize. The limit for one vehicle is 50.
