EXTRA CATTLE ON FARMS
Effect On Worm Infestation r (New Zealand Press Association) I INVERCARGILL, May 12. , •‘The production of fat lambs is tempting farmers to carry ewes on for a further season, rather than to cull and send them to the work,” said the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Skinner) today when he opened the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s winter show. “This trend is not altogether satisfactory, as the retention of ’ ewes is increasing the sheep concentration per acre, particularly ■ on the higher fertility country. [ This heavy concentration tends to increase parasite infestation and also trace element troubles. • “For efficient management and • the utilisation of feed on these . areas, the carrying of extra ; cattle would help as the grazing . of cattle definitely tends to re- , duce the incidence of parasites . in the sheep,” he said. • “I know sheepmen object tc . over-wintering of cattle ,as it is . often difficult to dispose of them . just when they wish to, owing . to limitations at the works, bul > this will be changed when th< - new works come into operatior . next year.**
