DEATH DUTIES ISSUE
Appeal Made To Farmers (New Zealand. Press Association) WANGANUI, May 13. An appeal to farmers not to let the death duties issue become a “political football” but rather that these energies be directed towards the preparation of facts and figures to support any claims, was made today by Mr N. W. Parsons at* the annual conference of the Wanganui provincial district of Federated Farmers. In reviewing the death duties position in New Zealand, Mr Parsons advocated that the Wanganui federation should “start, the ball rolling” by convening a meeting of representatives of district interests, both in the town and country. A joint committee could then go fully into the question. Mr B. Dryden (Waverley) supported Mr Parsons’ suggestion. He felt that there was still a cleavage between town and country, although the gap had been closed in recent years. There were many city and town people who did not realise that the welfare of the country was closely tied up with the farming industry. A remit from the Waverley branch recommending that a special committee be set up to investigate the question of death duties and taxation was unanimously carried by the meeting.
