ADDINGTON MARKET Weaker Demand For Store Stock Evident

Though there were smaller entries in most store stock sections at Addington market yesterday, the sales were followed by fewer farmers and inquiry was slacker with the apparent onset of‘winter. ■ Steer and heifer calves were cheaper again on last week’s weaker sale, with many heifer calves looking very reasonable buying indeed for those farmers who wanted them. There was a similar trend about the market for older cattle. Only forward condition lambs were in demand. They sold at up to late rates but plain and backward lambs were hard selling and tended to be, if any- « thing, slightly easier than at the last sale. All classes of a small entry of ewes sold at easier rates and old, inferior and low condition ewes were difficult to quit.

The entry of store sheep totalled 6904, compared with 8158 last week,| and comprise# ,4522 store lambs, 347 two-tooth ewes, 1481 older ewes and 554 wethers. STORE LAMBS The store lamb sale followed very much the pattern of last week’s sale. The entry totalled 4522, compared with 4764 last week. Quality was generally fairjy mixed, with a sprinkling of good Romney and fine wool lambs. Only, a small gallery followed the sale. A good inquiry continued for lambs in forward condition, and values for these were fully up to late rates. The medium class lamb sold at about last week’s values, but the lighter and plainer carry-over lambs met a weak market with sales more difficult to make than last week, and values slightly easier. In the light of the continued cold wet conditions this trend was to be expected. In the ewe lamb section, emphasis was again on sheep with breeding, and apart from these, values were no better than for comparable wether lambs.

The pick .of the wether lambs made from 38s to 43s 6d. good from 30s to 365, average from 22s to 28s, and plain and light- from 9s 6d . to 17s. Shorn wether lambs sold from 35s to 45s for the best, with others down to 22s 6d. Best ewe lambs realised from 38s to 40s. average from 28s to 33s 6d, and others from 16s 6d to 245.

The lamb market was topped by the sale of 24 shorn Romney wether lambs from G. Skipper (Wainui) at 455. Twenty-seven down cross lambs from A. F. Payne (Springstson) realised 43s 6d. and a sale at 40s 6d for halfbreds was made by N. M. Turnbull (Amberley). The ewe lamb section was topped by the sale of a line of Romney ewe lambs on account of an undisclosed vendor at 40s -,. A « Luttrell (Spotswood) realised up to 38s for the tops of a line of 109 ewe lambs. Sales of lambs included:—

Mackintosh (Waipara), 74 two-tooth wethers at 45s 6d. 40 four-tooth wethers at 395; account client. 119 two-tooth wethers STORE CALVES There was a still weaker market for store calves, which were happily yarded in much smaller numbers, the entry totalling 540, compared with 1101 last week. Quality overall was fairly good, with only a small percentage of smaller and. plain calves. The sale did not arouse much interest, and there was only a small gathering of prospective buyers. From the outset prices were on a lower level, with heifer calves showing perhaps the most marked decline and looking to' be very reasonable buying. Over-all values could probably be quoted back about 20s a head. However, when the sale of small pens was reached right at the close of the auction there seemed to be some improvement in the tone. The top sale in the steer calf market was made on account of the estate of H. Snushall (Conway Hills), whose 28 Aberdeen AngusHereford cross calves realised from £l4 18s 6d to £l6 13s 6d. The best of 30 calves of similar breeding from C. Deans (Waiau) also made up to £l4 18s 6d. Straight black cattle from S. Winchester (Temuka) brought up to £l3 18s 6d. In the heifer calf section the estate H. Snushall also gained top price at £l2 18s 6d for Aberdeen AngusHereford cross, and it also sold 12 Hereford cross at £ll 17s. The following is a range of values for calves:—

ADULT CATTLE The adult cattle entry at 275 was about half the size of last week’s yarding and for steers—mainly young cattle—and cows, the market was inclined to be a little slacker. In the cow market competition from boner interests was restricted and this contributed to a slight easing in values. Little interest was shown in consignments of small* and inferior steers and heifers included in the entry. Cows sold up to £33 8s 6d for the. tops of a line of seven from the estate of H. Snushall (Conway Hills), and this vendor also realised £43 6s 6d for a heifer. Out of a sizeable selection of 18 and 20 month steers the top price of £2B 3s 6d was paid for the top cut of a line of 35 18 month old Aberdeen Angus from Coleridge Downs Estate (Lake Coleridge), which sold from £23 13s 6d. E. C. Latter (Kaikoura) realised to £25 3s 6d for Hereford steers of this age group. The following is a range of values for adult cattle:— Cows.—Best to £33 8s 6d, average to good £l9 8s 6d to £23 8s 6d. average £l4 3s 6d to £l6 Is, others down to £ll 18s 6d.
