NATIVE FUNGI DISPLAYED

Exhibits From West Coast Native fungi in natural colours, set in mosses, and surrounded with ferns will be on display in a city shop until Friday. They were grown at Moana. on the West Coast, and gathered by Mrs J. Valenski and her six children. Black and violet devil’s fingers, red. blue, yellow, and white secotiums, scarlet fly caps, and a tree fungus which used to be exported to China known as Jews’ ears were among the fungi displayed. They were set in umbrella, fairy and feather mosses and Aaron’s beard and sticta lichens."

The Velenskis have provided toadstools and mosses for displays in other parts of the Dominion and two years ago a tray was included in other native flora sent to Britain for a display’ at Harrogate. After the display, the fungi will be submitted to the curator of the Botanic Gardens.
