NORTHERN NIGERIA
Independence Celebrations (Rec. 11.20 p.m.) KADUNA (Northern Nigeria), May 13. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester arrived in Nigeria by air today to represent the Queen at Northern Nigeria’s self-govern-ftment celebrations which will begin in the regional capital. Kaduna, tomorrow. Britain’s Colonial Secretary (Mr Alan Lennox-Boyd) will arrive tomorrow to join the Royal couple and representatives from various parts of Africa at a State dinner for which a 2500-piece china dinner service has been ordered from Britain. Highlight of the celebrations will be a durbar on Friday—possibly the last ever to be staged in this part of Africa. Three thousand horses and 8500 people, some wearing centuriesold chain mail, will take part in the spectacular display. Thousands of guests have poured into Kaduna, the capital of a region which is three times the size of the United Kingdom and has a population of 18 million. The whole federation will become selfgoverning on October 1. 1960.
