Naming A Suburb
Sir,—“Resident’s” letter has raised the very problem that is bothering me and possibly others. Auckland and Dunedin always seem to me to have their suburbs clearly delineated and named, but Christchurch, no. We have friends in the Kendal-Howden streets area. What suburb are the thousands of houses here in? It is hardly Papanui or Bryndwr, and certainly not Fendalton. Other folk we know are in the KellysMahars road area; about 2306 houses here are in a nameless suburb. It would not seem to be St. Albans or Shirley. I myself live among the hundreds of houses around Coach Corner—Upper Riccarton is not regarded as extending this far out, surely? Could it be Avonhead or Racecourse? Are there such suburbs? In fact, who is it in Christchurch who should look into this matter, and let the newer residents of the city’s 200,000 population know where they proudly live? —Yours, etc., RESIDENT 11. May 6, 1959.
