■•The Press’* Special Service
DUNEDIN, February 19. A brilliant sprint by Elrick, smart efforts by Allfair and Wondon, and attractive gallops by King Cassock, Nugget, Milord, and Arabian Chief were the highlights of the track work at Wingatui this morning. Conditions were ideal and the track was fast. In one of the few gallops on the plough Wondon (A. I. Powell) ran the opening furlong in 11 4-ssec and cut out half a mile in 51 2-ssec. The Someo gelding is one of the fancied runners in the Autumn Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double, at Wingatui. Hearth Rug (B. J. Anderton) could have improved on his effort of running three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. The Super gelding is well forward for his tilt at the open sprint. Our Heritage (L. Hare) impressed more than Chips (S. Dy ack) over half a mile in 53 3-ssec, the first furlong in 13 3-ssec. King Cassock (B. P. Kennedy) was favoured by a pull in the weights when he had a length to spare from Cashmere (J. D. Pankhurst), who was clear of Bow Tie (R. Crowe-), at the end of six furlongs on the outside of the course proper in Imin 18sec, the first three furlongs in the good time of 37sec. King Cassock will make a fresh start in the hack sprint, the Central Handicap, in which he .is second top weight. Good Effort The Riccarton galloper, Nugget (H. T. Anderton), worked on her own over the same ground when she ran the distance in Imin 19 3-ssec, the opening three furlongs in 38sec. This effort will bring her into favour for the Tradesmen’s Handicap, the distance hack event. Smart (C. McDonald) had a neck to spare from Panel (B. P. Kennedy) in Imin 21 4-ssec the first three furlongs in 39 2-ssec. A candidate. for the Otago Handicap, Smart bruised a heel during the gallop, but his trainer. J D. Pankhurst, said this would not prevent him from fulfilling his engagement. Whiohau (H. T. Anderton) was not out for- time when he ran the first three furlongs in 39 3-ssec and completed six in Imin 22 2-ssec. Arabian Chief (B. E. Kennedy) completed his preparation for the Taieri Hack Hurdles in an impressive manner. Ridden by B. E. Kennedy, he completed seven furlongs in company with Milord (J. D. Pankhurst) in Imin 34sec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. This time was equalled by Black Star (A. I. Powell), which came home the last three furlongs in 41sec. The Gabador four-year-old will be ridden by R. J. Skelton in the Otago Handicap. Master David (R. Low) is not usually a good track galloper, . but he kept on terms with Believe Me (B. E. Kennedy) in Imin 34 2-ssec. They ran the opening half-mile in 52sec. Near Peak Form Treasure Pond (B. J. Anderton) and The Era (B. P. Kennedy) shaded Sydtrev (H. T. Anderton) in Imin 36sec, the .last three furlongs in 42sec. Treasure Pond appears to be in top order. Jet Flight (R. A. Low) showed improvement to run out five furlongs solidly in Imin ssec, the first two furlongs in 24 3-ssec. Lady Cortauld (H. J. Powell) was not hurried to finish on terms with Ben Ledi (B. P. Kennedy) and Subside (R. J. Skelton) in Imin 9sec, the last three furlongs in 42sec. Elrick (H. T. Anderton) showed brilliance to dash over three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. The Kurdistan gelding is one of the early favourites for the Dunedin Two-year-old Handicap. Allfair (R J. Skelton) gave Madame Curie (A. I. Powell) a length start and beat her by threequarters of a length in 38 2-ssec. Relations (K. J. Schubert) came home in 39 2-ssec. and Fox Powder (B. E. Kennedy) equalled this time. King Gus (K. J. Schubert) shaded Courteous (J. Didham) in 39 4-ssec. Meridian (B. P. Kennedy) shaded Strath Maris (P. Denton) and Pandion (H. T. Anderton) over half a mile in 52sec, the opening furlong in 12 3-ssec. Panoli (J. D. Pankhurst) was not
ridden out in 52 3-ssec, the first furlong in 13sec. Callamara (R. Low) and Salisbury (B. E. Kennedy) were on terms in 52sec, the last three furlongs in 39sec, and Wildair (H. J. Powell) and Depend (H. T. Anderton) took 53 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. Montrose and Tut Tut, ridden by B. Blair, jumped well over two flights of hurdles Royal Chant, Ration Time, Juliette, Hand Over, Promise, Shoal, Awatere. Surhine and Waterfall were restricted to pace work.
