RACING Brookfields Lad-Royal Chant For D.J.C. Double

• Brockfields Lad and Royal Chant are selected to win the major races on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Wingatui tomorrow. _ The Orari-trained Brookfields Lad has 7-10 in the Handicap, which is the first leg of the T.A.B. double, and, Royal Chant is top weight with 9-4 in the Autumn Handicap, the second leg. Brookfields Lad will be ridden by W. D. Skelton, who has a big following with doubles backers, and will probably be favourite.

Skelton has an outstanding record m major races at Wingatui. He won the main handicaps on Canon on the first and second days of the Dunedin Cup meeting in December. Each time. Canon was winning the first leg of a T.A.B. double. Since then, Skelton has won a first leg on Motueka at Riccarton,i and second legs on Bamboo at Trentham and London Tower at Hokitika. The top-weight in the Otago Handicap is the Riccarton-trained Shoal. She has not been successful in 11 starts this season, but beat all but Canon the last time she raced at Wingatui. Shoal won the Dunedin Cup last year, and might improve her good record on the course if the race is a test for stamina. Shoal usually comes right from the back in her races and her strong finishes have been difficult to match at times. In her case much could depend on the pace for the first mile or so. If the race develops into a sprint home—and many races in the South Island this season have done so—Shoal might not manage to give some of the others weight and a start from the three furlongs. Any easing in the track will help Shoal. It will also help Nasib, another Riccarton representative.

Nasib has been lightly raced this season, but has to his credit a victory over the top-flight stayer, Ark Royal. Nasib and Ark RoyU were first and second over this distance in one of the major races at the Dunedin spring meeting. Nasib will be ridden by A. J. Stokes, another horseman with a good record at Wingatui. Form horses from southern stables are Treasure Pond and Master David. Treasure Pond won the Gore Cup at her last start, that following seconds at three successive starts. Master David was twice placed at the Southland New Year meeting, and was runner-up to Ark Royal in the Invercargill Gold Cup. It may be an all-Wingatui finish to the second leg. Royal Chant has the ability to come out on top, but might be put to the test by Hearth Rug, Wondon, and Promise. Waterfall, from Riccarton, and Bridal Bay, from Waimate, will be Canterbury’s only representatives. The club will also operate a double for course patrons on the Central and Tradesmen’s Hack Handicaps. Canterbury will be strongly representated in both races, with Ray spar and Hannibal in the first leg, and Lightning Boy, Royal Avon, and Fern in the second. Selections:—
