FIERCE FIRES IN VICTORIA
Forest Lands Threatened
(Rec. 11 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 22. About 1000 men are fighting fires threatening big sections of forest lands and scrub in the south-west and far east of Victoria In the south-west, about 50 women and children have again been withdrawn from the small forestry settlement of Rennick. close to the path of the fire. , This is the third time Rennick has been evacuated. • a South Australian fire-fighters raced from Mount Gambier, near the Victorian border, today to reinforce Victorian units. Two major fires are still burning out of control in the Orbost district of East Gippsland. in south-eastern Victoria The most dangerous fires in the State today were burning north and north-east of Orbost. A firefighting team recruited from nearby districts today joined a big crew already there Authorities said in Melbourne today that with “a bit of luck” the bush fire position could be eased within the next 48 hours.
