1501 At End Of September
(New Zealand Press Association/ WELLINGTON. January 22. Unemployed in New Zealand totalled 1501 at the end of September of last year. It was a sharp increase from the previous year, when 508 were notified out of work. Most of the unemployed in September—the last recorded date —were males. They number 1435. The Department of Industries and Commerce reports the figures in its survey of business conditions for the third quarter of last year. Employment vacancies numbered 5690. a decrease from the total of 8190 of the previous year Vacancies in Wellington and Hutt Valley numbered 1281, compared with 2133 the previous year. The vacancies are those notified to district offices of the Department of Labour for their placement services. Total vacancies are recorded only in half-yearly surveys. The Auckland Employment Office had about 40 per cent, of the unemployed (579) compared with its share of 22 per cent of the labour force. Wellington's unemployed numbered 83. The summary said the third quarter of the year reflected continued buoyancy but there were indications of a more cautious outlook.
