WHITE ISLAND TO ST. CLAIR

Six Swimmers Successful (New Zeaiana Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 21. Six St. Clair Surf Club members this evening swam from White Island to St. Clair beach in the record time of 54 minutes. The first mass attempt for many years at the mile and five-eighths course, it was a complete success in spite of difficult conditions. A stiff breeze sprang up just before the attempt, and this, coupled with a strong current and choppy waves made the task a difficult one. The swimmers,' liberally coated with grease, all completed the course without hardship.' White Island to St. Clair has been a swim which has challenged many Otago distance swimmers for decades, but few have managed to complete the course. Main difficulties to be overcome are the strong current, the cold, and rough water. The six members, E- Morete, G. paape, V. Gore, C. Cousins, J. Donoghue, and G. Jacobsen, were escorted during their swim by three surf canoes and three surf skis.
