STATISTICS OF PRODUCTION
Dairy production in New Zealand for the year ending June 30, 1958, reached its highest point for the last decade with a total of 1154.6 m gallons of liquid milk being recorded, according to the latest issue of the Abstract of Statistics.
Of this, 101.7 m gallons was directly used for town milk or table cream and 1006.2 m gallons was used for butter or cheese manufacture. The total commercial butterfat production was estimated at 488.5 m lb, the amount paid to the farmers by dairy factories. Creamery butter manufactured was also at a record level for the ten. years since 1948, the period under survey, and 214,600 tons was made. The tonnage released on the local market increased by 100 tons, which left 171,800 tons available for export. Cheese production in the 195758 season regained the slight fall of the previous year with 96,500 tons manufactured, of which 6100
tons were released on the local market and the balance of 90,400 tons was available for overseas. Local markets took 300 tons more than in the 1956-57 year.
Production of condensed and powdered whole milk continued to decline and 1890 tons less were manufactured. Skim milk powder production was 4590 tons less but buttermilk powder increased by 1690 tons to 15,790 tons. Casein showed a sharp increase of 8680 tons to a total production of 22,510 tons, the highest recorded.
